How to manage conflicts at work

Conflicts with your supervisors at work can easily become a reason for dismissal. Conflicts with colleagues can poison your life and eventually you will have to quit yourself. Both situations are not at all pleasant and you should at least know how to avoid them. We have summarized the data on how to identify the main causes of conflicts and proposed the most simple but effective ways to reduce the risks of being dragged into the conflicts. Of course, lucky are those people who can use the  opportunities to work from home, but for those whose job involves working in the office this article will definitely come in handy.

manage conflicts

The two most popular types of conflict are the following: the first is the rejection of a new employee by the team because of the conflict with the experienced employee. And the second one is the conflict with the authorities because of disagreement over decision making.

It is essential to start to determine whether it is just about the conflict. Otherwise, you will begin to solve the wrong problem.

What conflicts are more dangerous: with superiors or with a team?

Conflicts with the authorities are traditionally short-term  and if not resolved immediately, then you can expect the dismissal within 1-2 months.

In case of conflict with colleagues, on the other hand, can reach up to 1.5-2 years and not necessarily lead to the immediate dismissal.

How to reduce the risks of conflict?

The first step  is to realize that there is a conflict. When you evaluate ongoing actions and realized that it is not only in your work but also in collisions of characters and interests, it is necessary to minimize the intensity of emotions.

Up to two-thirds of the conflicts are the reason for dismissal is due to the fact that the participants at the beginning tend to break into open confrontation, and then just can not stop. The simplest phrases like “We’ll talk when we all calm down” saved many careers.

So, it’s necessary to keep emotions under control at the beginning of the conflict. When you are able to communicate more balanced and less emotional you can resolve any controversial issue. The most recommended thing here is to get distracted by doing something else – making a cup of coffee or arranging some papers on your desk.

Do not argue but ask questions instead. When you hear the allegations against you, do not blame back and not make excuses – agree and specify. For example: “I realize that this is done wrong, but I want to understand, I ask you to explain my mistakes to me.”

Take the side of the opponent. By clarifying questions is very easy to go to the next step: associate ourselves with the opponent, and ask for help. Here traditionally phrases like “I’m not sure that I know exactly how to do it, I need your prompt …” or “I find it difficult …and I will be grateful if you could help me …”. The secret of success is in the control your emotions and to ask open questions.  Before running your  job search you should know what skills and abilities your dream jobs requires. If it deals with working under pressure meeting deadlines, you’d better know how to behave in order to avoid conflicts with your boss. The conflict is easier to prevent if you are more proactive. For example, if you do not have time to do the job on time, it is best to go to your boss and say, “Yes, there may be a conflict, but I have a problem here.”
